Oulu is known as one of Finland’s best cycling cities, and summer 2026 offers many opportunities to join group rides and longer bicycle trips. Before an event or a long ride, it is worth making sure that the bicycle is safe and ready to ride.

This article collects currently confirmed cycling events and a practical checklist for getting ready. Always check possible changes with the event organiser.

What should you check before a long ride?

On a long ride, even a small fault can end the trip. A few minutes of checking before departure can save a lot of trouble.

Brakes

Make sure that:

  • the brakes stop the bicycle effectively
  • the levers feel firm
  • the brake pads still have material left
  • the brakes do not rub continuously

If the brakes feel uncertain, have them checked before the event.

Tires

Check:

  • correct tire pressure
  • no cuts or bulges
  • enough tread remains
  • no glass or other sharp objects are stuck in the tire

Low tire pressure increases the risk of punctures and makes riding harder.

Gears

The gears should shift:

  • quickly
  • without the chain jumping
  • without loud rattling

If the gears already work unreliably in your driveway, the problem will usually get worse during a long ride.

Chain

The chain should be:

  • clean
  • lubricated
  • as quiet as possible while riding

Strong grinding or squeaking often means that the chain needs cleaning, lubrication or service.

What should you take on a long bicycle ride?

On a long ride, carry at least:

  • a spare inner tube
  • tire levers
  • a pump or CO₂ cartridge
  • a multi-tool
  • something to drink
  • a phone
  • identification

On longer trips, a small first-aid kit can also be useful.

What if a problem appears just before departure?

If you notice, for example:

  • weak braking
  • a tire that keeps losing air
  • gears jumping
  • a broken or badly worn chain

do not set off before the condition of the bicycle has been checked. Safety matters more than making it to the event on time.

Summary

Summer 2026 offers many opportunities to cycle in Oulu, whether you join a group ride or plan your own longer trip. Spend a few minutes checking the bicycle before departure. Working brakes, correct tire pressure, reliable gears and a well-maintained chain make riding safer and more comfortable.

If a problem appears just before departure, fix it before riding.
