By the middle of summer, a bicycle may have covered hundreds or even thousands of kilometres. Commuting, recreational rides and changing weather gradually wear down the moving parts. Even though Oulu has an excellent cycling network, regular use wears brakes, chains, tires and gears. Rain and moisture can increase the need for maintenance as well.
If you notice any of the following signs, it is worth checking the bicycle before a small issue turns into a larger repair.
1. The brakes no longer feel effective
The brakes should stop the bicycle reliably and evenly.
You can safely check that:
- the brake levers do not pull almost all the way to the handlebar
- both sides of the brake engage evenly
- the brakes do not rub continuously
If the brakes feel weak, make a loud noise or the bicycle does not stop normally, do not continue riding before having it checked.
2. The tires wear out or lose air unusually quickly
The tires are the bicycle’s only contact with the road, so their condition matters.
Check for example:
- clearly worn tread
- cracks or cuts
- whether the tires hold pressure normally
- glass or other sharp objects stuck in the tire
Repeated air loss may indicate damage to the inner tube or the tire.
3. The gears do not shift cleanly
If the gears jump, the chain drops or shifting is delayed, the bicycle often needs an adjustment or a check of its wearing parts.
Cleaning may help, but persistent problems should be inspected by a professional.
4. The chain is noisy or looks dry
A quiet chain is usually a sign that the drivetrain is working properly.
Pay attention to:
- squeaking
- metallic grinding
- visible rust
- a thick layer of dirt
A dirty and dry chain wears quickly and can also wear the cogs.
5. The bicycle has started making new noises
A well-functioning bicycle usually does not make unnecessary noises.
Examples include:
- clicking while pedalling
- rattling on an uneven road
- squealing while braking
- grinding from the drivetrain
The exact cause can be difficult to identify yourself, so persistent noises should be investigated early.
6. The steering or handling feels different
If the bicycle does not track straight or the steering feels stiff or loose, there may be a mechanical problem.
Steering adjustments should not be made without the right tools and knowledge, because they affect riding safety.
7. The bicycle has been ridden a lot without service
Even when no obvious fault is visible, an actively used bicycle benefits from regular service.
During the summer, the following parts are especially prone to wear:
- the chain
- brake pads
- gear adjustments
- tires
Regular checks help keep the bicycle safe and can prevent more extensive repairs later.
What can you check yourself?
Before bringing the bicycle in, you can safely check at least:
- tire pressure
- the visible condition of the tires
- chain cleanliness
- the basic feel of the brakes
- visibly loose or missing parts
If you are unsure about the bicycle’s safety or cannot identify the problem, have it checked by a professional.

Summary
During the summer, a bicycle can accumulate many kilometres even when problems are not immediately noticeable. Weaker brakes, inaccurate shifting, chain noise, worn tires or new unusual sounds are all reasons to have the bicycle checked.
Servicing the bicycle before larger faults develop usually keeps it safer to ride and helps wearing parts last longer.
