Summer is the busiest cycling season in Jyväskylä. Although many of the spring cycling events have already taken place, long rides, group rides and late-summer outdoor activities continue. Before a longer ride, spend a few minutes checking the bicycle. A small service can prevent a puncture or another technical problem during the ride.

Fillarikino and a group bicycle ride
Date: Saturday 22 August 2026
The programme for the anniversary year of Jyväskylä’s Kehä Vihreä includes Fillarikino, with bicycle-themed film screenings and an approximately two-hour group ride starting from the Kangas area. The event is free and organised by the City of Jyväskylä together with the Central Finland Film Centre, Äkkigalleria and Jyväskylän Pyöräilyseura JYPS.
Check the exact meeting point and possible changes on the organiser’s website before setting off.

Kehä Vihreä offers good routes for long rides
Jyväskylä’s Kehä Vihreä connects several popular outdoor areas in the city. The route includes both asphalt and park-like sections, and it is easy to use it to build a longer ride around places such as Lake Tuomiojärvi, Tourujoki and Lake Jyväsjärvi.
Before a long ride, check the city’s notices for possible maintenance work or event arrangements.

Checklist before a long bicycle ride
Take your time to check the bicycle before a longer ride or event.
Brakes
- Test the front and rear brakes.
- Make sure the brakes stop the bicycle effectively.
- Check that no brake is rubbing continuously.
Tires
- Check tire pressure according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
- Look for cuts, cracks and sharp objects.
- Make sure the tires are properly seated on the rims.
Gears
- Shift through all the gears in a safe place.
- If the chain skips or the gears do not shift properly, have the bicycle serviced before a long ride.
Chain
- Make sure the chain is clean and lubricated.
- Strong squeaking or rust is often a sign that service is needed.
Lights
Even if you set off during daylight, check the lights before a long ride. The weather or schedule can change during the day.
Tools and equipment
Useful items to bring include:
- a spare inner tube
- tire levers
- a hand pump or CO₂ cartridge
- a multi-tool
- a water bottle
- a phone
- identification or a payment method
When should you service the bicycle before an event?
Service the bicycle well before an event or a long weekend ride if:
- the brakes feel weak
- the gears shift poorly
- a tire has gone flat or keeps losing air
- the chain makes a noise
- the bicycle has new rattling or grinding sounds
- the bicycle has not been used for a long time
The day before an event is not always the best time to discover that the brake pads are worn out or a tire needs replacing.
