Autumn in Central Finland brings new challenges to cycling. Wet leaves, rain, grit and later icy conditions put more strain on a bicycle than dry summer weather. When a bicycle is serviced before autumn or stored correctly for winter, it is usually easier to put back into use in spring.

This guide explains what to check before the autumn rains, how to store a bicycle safely through winter and what to know about studded tires and tire pressure.

Wash the bicycle before autumn service

During summer, a bicycle collects dust, grit, pollen and chain oil. Autumn moisture binds dirt to the components more effectively and can accelerate wear.

Before service, it is worth:

  • washing the frame and wheels
  • cleaning the chain and cogs
  • removing old dirt from the drivetrain
  • drying the bicycle carefully

Avoid using a powerful pressure washer near bearings, the bottom bracket or other sealed components, because water can get into the structures.

The chain and drivetrain need attention

Autumn moisture increases the risk of rust, especially on the chain.

Check, for example:

  • whether the chain is clean
  • whether there is any rust
  • whether the gears shift normally
  • whether the drivetrain makes unusual sounds

After cleaning, lubricate the chain with a lubricant intended for bicycle chains. Wipe off excess oil so that dirt does not stick to the chain unnecessarily. Shimano recommends regular drivetrain cleaning, especially in wet riding conditions.

Check the brakes before slippery conditions

Stopping distances can increase on wet asphalt, leaves and gravel in autumn.

Before autumn, check:

  • the condition of the brake pads
  • how the brakes work
  • the cables or hydraulic system
  • that no brake is rubbing

If the brakes feel ineffective or make an unusual sound, have them serviced before winter conditions begin.

Tires and tire pressure

Tire condition has a major impact on safety in autumn.

Check:

  • the tread
  • possible cuts
  • cracks
  • that the tire is seated correctly on the rim

Tire pressure should always be chosen within the range specified by the tire manufacturer. Suitable pressure depends, for example, on tire width, load and riding surface. Pressure that is too low increases puncture risk, while pressure that is too high can reduce grip on uneven surfaces.

What do salt, moisture and grit do to a bicycle?

Winter maintenance methods vary by route. Moisture, dirt, fine grit and possible road salt can all accelerate bicycle wear.

They can cause, for example:

  • chain rust
  • stiff cables
  • worn cogs
  • dirty brakes
  • premature bearing wear

If you ride during winter, clean the bicycle regularly and dry it after a ride if it has been in wet conditions for a long time.

Store the bicycle properly for winter

If the bicycle will not be used during winter, storage has a major effect on its condition.

Good practices include:

  • wash the bicycle before storing it
  • dry it carefully
  • lubricate the chain
  • store it in a place that is as dry as possible
  • avoid storing it for long periods in a constantly damp environment

If possible, leave some air in the tires during storage. Storing a bicycle for a long time on completely flat tires can put strain on the tires and rims.

For an e-bike battery, always follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions. Do not open the battery yourself or store it in extreme temperatures.

Studded tires improve winter grip

When conditions become icy, studded tires can significantly improve grip.

Consider studded tires especially if:

  • you commute by bicycle year-round
  • your routes have icy sections
  • you cycle early in the morning or late in the evening
  • you use the bicycle regularly during winter too

When first riding on new studded tires, they are generally run in according to the manufacturer’s instructions so that the studs settle properly.

When should autumn service be done?

Autumn service is best done before the bicycle starts showing symptoms.

Signs that service may be needed include:

  • a squeaking chain
  • inaccurate gear shifting
  • reduced braking power
  • worn tires
  • new sounds from the bicycle

Small adjustments and replacement of wearing parts are often easier before autumn moisture and winter conditions make the problems worse.
